We are seeking expressions of interest (EOI) to join the SoS Technical Group (STG), an expert advisory group under the Saving our Species (SoS) program.

About the STG
The role of the SoS STG is to provide expert scientific advice to support proposed changes to conservation strategies for threatened species and communities in NSW. Conservation strategies are statutory documents that form the basis of the SoS program, outlining monitoring and management design for conservation projects. Members of the STG provide expert advice and review for proposed changes to these strategies, supporting adaptive management to ensuring efficiently and effectively secure threatened species and communities in the wild. The STG panel is comprised of a diverse range of ecological experts both internal and external to the NSW government.

There are positions available to join the flora, threatened ecological communities and fauna sub-groups of the STG. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water offers ecological consultants a nominal payment of $150 per hour (plus GST) for STG related work.

Positions are available in any of the three STG sub-groups – Flora, Fauna, or Threatened Ecological Communities (TECs). Each of these sub-groups is comprised of experts with specialty in these categories, designed to provide high-quality, targeted review of proposed strategy changes.

About you
For all sub-groups candidates should have expertise in species or community ecology, life history, demographics, taxonomy or syntaxonomy, threat impacts and management, ecosystem function, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, and experimental survey design.
Membership in the TEC sub-group also requires an understanding of the classification and description of New South Wales TECs, and current approaches to ecological community and ecosystem scale conservation.
Membership in all sub-groups also requires a good understanding of the SoS program logic and management streams. Support and onboarding will be available for those who are not familiar with the program framework.
People who identify as female or any experts in Threatened Ecological Communities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Becoming a member
The STG operates entirely online so we encourage any applicants with expertise in NSW taxa or ecological communities to apply. Members are not required to review all proposals but are encouraged to provide feedback on proposals that are relevant to their expertise. If successful, new members will be asked to join an online onboarding session that outlines the role of members and the SoS framework.
