2025 Australian Election Message

Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) urges Labor to prioritise environmental protection

Following the 2025 federal election, the Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) congratulates the new Labor Government. Ahead of the election, we outlined key environmental priorities that are essential for protecting Australia’s biodiversity. As the government sets its agenda, we now urge them to take immediate action on these priorities.

Our key priorities:

  1. Champion evidence-based decisions
We call for policies that embed ecological science and Indigenous knowledge in decision-making, ensuring that Australia continues to lead in environmental research and management.
  2. Enact strong and enforceable legislation
Reform the EPBC Act to ensure biodiversity protection and ecosystem restoration. Stronger regulatory enforcement will help safeguard Australia’s natural environment for future generations.
  3. Include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and knowledge in decision-making and caring for Country
Support Indigenous-led environmental management, including expanding Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs) and ensuring Indigenous voices are central in decisions regarding land, water, and biodiversity.
