The Save a Species 2015 initiative seeks to raise awareness about the efforts underway to save our planet’s biodiversity on a local level, thus ensuring a vibrant future for the world’s fifth most biodiverse country. 

To demonstrate the Botanic Gardens’ commitment to the conservation of Australia’s vibrant flora and distinct heritage, over the course of three days, three teams made up of horticulturalists, curators and scientists from the Botanic Gardens and Centennial Parklands will complete routes totalling more than 380 kms, highlighting (15) threatened plant species, some of which can all be found along the way.

It is estimated up to 50% of the world’s plant species face extinction, and here in Australia, the stakes keep getting higher, with 10% of our native plant species listed as endangered. There are a range of threats that continue to adversely affect our unique and varied plant life –  including climate change and habitat destruction  – making the conservation work being done at the Botanic Gardens all the more urgent.
