The Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) champions strong science for a thriving planet and people. We are committed to working alongside our nation’s institutions and leaders to address the challenges before us.

We call on our nation’s leaders and those seeking election to act on the following issues:

1. The impacts of climate change on Australia’s species and ecosystems. The time to act is now. Urgent and substantive reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is critical to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change.
2. Protect habitat and halt clearing of native vegetation. Land clearing is a key threat to Australian species and contributes to climate change. Meaningful progress to stop further loss is needed.
3. Increase long-term Commonwealth investment in environmental research and applications to deliver the knowledge and solutions required to halt further losses of species and ecosystems, and support adaptation under climate change.
4. Implement the 38 recommendations for reform outlined in the EPBC Act Review (Oct 2020), to provide a robust framework for upholding environmental protection and accountability.
5. Increase representation and authentic inclusion of Indigenous communities in ecosystem policy and management decisions.

Australia is home to a wealth of unique environments and species that are a cornerstone of our national character, and vital to the ongoing wellbeing and prosperity of our country. The continuation of this wealth is under severe threat: Australia is a world leader in the extinction of species and at the forefront of climate change impacts. Reversing our environmental crisis and ensuring people and nature thrive together on Earth is a grand challenge we must tackle.

The need for effective, evidence-based environmental leadership and action is greater than ever. Australia is well-equipped to deliver this if it chooses.
